New Baby Smell

So had anyone else noticed have new baby's have that wonderful smell? Maybe it's the Johnson and Johnson's but they smell good.  It could be the soap, but new baby's just have this great smell to them. Just like how new baby's are so soft.  No matter how much a lotion promises baby soft skin, nothing compares to the way baby's feel and smell. Maybe it's because their new. Ok. not that I'm comparing my baby to a car, but new cars have that certain smell to them. That new car smell. Maybe that's why baby's smell so good their new. How often do we get to be around a brand new person? Their only new for so long. Right now she's new and perfect.  Maybe that's what the new baby smell is, perfection. Maybe that's why we love that new baby smell.  Whatever it is, I love Emily's new baby smell.  She's my perfect baby girl.

Look at that hair!

Emily Grace turned 6 weeks yesterday. She has many talents for someone her age. She can hold her head up ( most of the time ), make spit bubbles, explode diapers, sleep with her eyes open ( scared me silly the first time she did it) smile, giggle and one of my favorites sticking her tongue out at people.  Doug, Emily and I went out to Ihop the other morning for breakfast before I took him to work.  When we were standing in line waiting to pay, and there was this older gentleman with a beard standing behind us. He starts making faces at Emily and talking to her. She does her usual thing and sticks her tongue out at him then keeps looking around.  He says " Your suposse to like old men with beards like me, we look like Santa" I tell him " Oh, she really isn't smiling at everything yet, she mostly sticks her tongue out at people"  He gets this "I'm so sorry for you look" on his face and says " Well, I'm sure she'll come around soon" My mommy defenese come out and I'm thinking "She's 6 weeks old! I think if she sticks her tongue out back at you when you do it is pretty impressive!"  So I go " Oh, I think she's doing ok. She's only 5 weeks old. " Then he gets this shocked look on his face and goes " 5 weeks?! I thought she was 3 months! Look at all that hair! Lol, thats the first thing everyone says when they see her.  Funny huh? Losing hair makes you look older when your an adult but having when your a baby makes you look older.

Becoming a Mommy

My husband and I got married on July 6, 2007.  One month later a home pregnancy test said I was pregnant.  On April 15th at 6am Emily Grace was born.
For about a week before Emily came I started having contractions. I had been having Braxton Hicks for a month or so by then and these weren't it. So Doug , my mom and I went to the hospital.  A couple hours later we went home. False alarm. This happened about 4-6 times.  Friday morning before Emily came, we went in for doctor's appointment . Dr. Dunklee said she'd be surpised if I made it through the weekend.  I was 3cm which I had been at for the past week.  "I Am Legend" came in the mail that day so that evening we sat down to watch it. I was having contractions but we decided we didn't want to make another false alarm run. About 1/4 in the movie I went and laid down on our bed and tried to rest thinking it was another false alarm.  Doug called my parents to let them know it was starting up again. Pretty soon I was screaming into my pillow.  Doug called the labor floor at the hospital to let them know I was coming in again.  As we were walking down the stairs  to the car, my parents were walking up.  Mama got in the car with us and Papa followed us over.  WARNING! The rest of this post is going to be labor so if that freaks you out stop reading. We got to the hospital around 1am.  Once I was in the bed at the hospital, a nurse and who I'm guessing was a student nurse, come in.  They check to see how far along I am ( seriously no such thing as "privates" once your preggers ) and I'm at 6cm.  "So I'm really in labor?"  Nurse "Yes, you are."  Me " Good, otherwise this kid is in trouble " I get changed into the hospital gown and Mama goes to let Papa know that we're staying this time. When the doctor on duty , Dr. Leis, came in the first thing she asked was if I wanted an epidural. Now I had decided before hand that I didn't want drugs. But oh goodness they sounded good then, except that I was still scared of needles.  I said no, I'd try it a bit longer without it.  We put Celtic Women in the dvd player. So we were watching it and Doug was helping me breath through contractions and rubbing a back massager on my back.  Around 3am I asked the nurse what my options on pain medicines were. She said I still had time for the epidural or I could have some through my i.v. but since those go in my blood stream, they didn't want it to affect the baby when delivery came around, so they would only give me a dose that would help for an hour and it would only take the edge off the pain, not get rid of it compleatly.  They put the medicine in my i.v.  and dosed off for an hour, which is good thing since I'd been having contractions since Friday afternoon and was getting tired.  Around 4:30am the meds had worn off.  At 5am when they checked me again I was at 9cm.  The nurse went to get the doctor and things got crazy right around 5:30am. In the movies they only show a doctor and a nurse in the room. Kinda like how they show the women is in no pain, water breaks, all of a sudden contraction and baby comes out 5 mins later. Ha! Another 3 nurses joined the 2 that were there.  Mama who hates blood, needles etc sat down at the end of the bed to watch for some reason. She's said since her mom saw me born and she didn't want too, she'd watch me give birth.  Doug was up next to me on one side holding up one leg while a nurse was on the other side holding up the other leg. Now up until then no one had told me how to push and I was kinda worried since a friend of mine's sister pushed the wrong way and broke the bleed vessels in her face.  The doctor told me take one cleasning breath, then take a big breath hold it, put my chin to my chest and bare down to the count of ten, three time then relax.  She asks Doug to count, which was nice since Doug has a calming voice.  I don't remember that much of the actual pushing part of labor but here's the bits and pieces I do remember.  After the first couple pushes the doctor says look at that hair! ( Which is something almost everyone says about Emily when they see her ) A little while later someone says Get the i.v! It was coming loose on my hand so they had to tape it down again.  Doug was wonderful.  Between pushes he was wiping my forehead with a damp washcloth and helping me. Later I asked him if he saw Emily come out, he said no, he kept his eyes on me so while everyone else was watching for Emily to come I would know someone was focused on me and loved me.  I love Doug, he's so good to me.  Dr. Leis tells me to give a good strong push and all of a sudden there was this relief of pressure and the doctor goes " It's a girl!" The doctor and nurses loved that we didn't want to know what it was beforehand because they don't get to have fun guessing anymore. She came at 6am on the nose.  They put her up on my tummy. She was covered in slimey stuff, red all over and the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. When they took her to weigh her and clean her up in the corner I had the weridest  feeling of the whole delivery. It felt like this giant peice of snot shot out from between my legs.  I almost jumped out of the bed.  "What was that?!" I'm freaking out, that felt werid! "Just the placenta" Strangest feeling ever and strangest thing to come out from that end.  Doug got to hold Emily while they were stitching me up from where I tore, which turned out to be the most nerve wrecking part for me. As I said before, I'm scared of needles and needles just don't belong in some areas so matter how much numb stuff they shot into your behind.  I don't remember Emily crying much once Doug got to hold her. She stuck her tounge out instead, which is still her favorite activity. She weighed 8.2 pounds, was 19 and 1/2 inches long and tons of hair. Now my sweet Emily Grace needs me, so this ends this post.
